Hi, I'm the Verbalist. But you can call me Dylan.*
I love language. Always have. Before becoming a writer, I studied English at Cambridge and then embarked on a PhD in Applied Linguistics. Until I decided that instead of just saying clever things about words, I wanted to use them to inform, to persuade and to entertain.
I started out as a scriptwriter – working for major players in film, TV, radio and theatre. My writing won rave reviews and a bunch of prizes. Screen International named me a 'Star of Tomorrow' – which was flattering if slightly optimistic, since I'm still waiting for my Oscar.
But as it turned out, the same skills that made me a great scriptwriter (like a knack for storytelling and tone of voice) also made me a great copywriter. And whether I was handling complex branding projects, or producing crisp, fault-free copy, being a linguistics expert also came in seriously handy.
So began my mission to help organisations of all types and sizes to use words better. To communicate who they are and what they do more clearly, more succinctly, and with maximum impact.
*The Verbalist is my writerly alter ego/nom de plume, but in the real world I'm generally known as Dylan Ritson.
